Dr. Markus U. Boehnert is a distinguished transplant surgeon and academic leader specializing in liver transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery. With over two decades of experience spanning Germany, Switzerland, Canada, the Netherlands, and Saudi Arabia, he has made significant contributions to advancing surgical techniques and transplant medicine.
Dr. Boehnert obtained his medical and dental degrees from Friedrich Alexander University, Germany, followed by specialized training in visceral and transplant surgery at the University of Berne, Switzerland. He further honed his expertise as a clinical fellow at Toronto General Hospital’s Multi-Organ Transplant Program. His academic credentials include a PhD from Semmelweis University, Hungary, and an MBA from Leuphana University, Germany.
Currently, Dr. Boehnert serves as the Director of the Living Donor Liver Transplant Program at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center, Riyadh. He is also an Associate Professor of Surgery at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, where he mentors future medical leaders. His research focuses on organ preservation, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and machine perfusion technologies, earning him prestigious grants, including multi-million-dollar funding from Saudi Arabia’s National Science, Technology, and Innovation Plan.
A thought leader in transplantation, Dr. Boehnert has received numerous awards, including the Young Investigator Award and Basic Science Trainee Award. He has contributed extensively to peer-reviewed journals and serves as an independent reviewer for leading medical publications.
